Buddha
On the full moon day of May in the year 623 B.C. the Buddha was born in the Lumbini Park into a Hindu family, on the Indian borders of Nepal in the Himalayan foothills. The father was King Suddhodana and the mother was Queen Maha Maya who died seven days after his birth.. When he was born, he displayed thirty two signs designating a ” Mahapurush-{greatman}- and a Universal Victor. The newly born prince walked seven steps and said,
” AGGOHAM ASMI LOKASSA ” meaning ” Chief am I in this world “.On the fifth day after his birth, the prince was named of Siddhatta. Gotama was his family name.
When he was only sixteen, Prince Siddhatta married his cousin Princess Yasodhara .He led a happy and luxurious married life for nearly thirteen years.
One glorious day,the prince went out of the palace to a park where he saw a diseased person a dead body,a decrepit old man and a yogi hermit. These four great sights caused him to question and renounce the world.
After ordering his charioteer Channa to prepare the horse Kanthaka,Prince Siddhatta made his historic journey in his twenty-ninth year leaving all the royal household behind him on the Vesakha full moon day at midnight. He crossed the river Anoma, sent Channa back to the Palace with shaving his hair. Now he became an ascetic yogi with no permanent abode. All he possessed was to cover the body and a begging bowl.
The ascetic Gotama practised all forms of yogi austerity for the next six years. His body was reduced to almost skeleton and on the verge of death. Then, he realised that physical fitness was essential for the spiritual progress. So, he started eating some food. The five ascetics who were with him all the time were disappointed at this change of course and deserted him.
it was determination that made him choose a practice to become a Buddha. This he did not see something as impossible but was determined to achieve Buddhahood in order to guide people to the path leading to the end of suffering.
